Personal Reflection –
This was a sweet book. I enjoyed how it was told by Catherine in her 11 year old perspective. Catherine had the cutest little personality and I think her orneriness made her even more adorable to me. This was a sweet book. I enjoyed how it was told by Catherine in her 11 year old perspective. Catherine had the cutest little personality and I think her orneriness made her even more adorable to me. Catherine spent much of her time looking out for her younger brother, David, who was autistic. I enjoyed reading her many rules for explaining to David how things should or should not be done. Catherine also befriended a young man in a wheelchair, Jason, whom she also writes words for. Her relationship with Jason was so enjoyable to see unfold. I could relate to Catherine's fear of what others thought of her based on her association with her autistic brother and handicapped friend. Catherine would see the many looks and could almost read the thoughts of others as they would walk by and stare at David and Jason. I know this feeling well as I have worked with many children and adults with disabilities and I have witnessed those stares and have even seen fear and pity in strangers' faces.
Purpose – This would be a great read-aloud or read-to-self book. It falls into the reading level of a 3rd or 4th grader. I believe that at this age, both boys and girls would enjoy this book quite well. The first lesson I would teach using this book would be that of showing all people respect and the importance of not passing unfair judgments on people or getting caught up on caring what others think based on superficial ideals. The next lesson I might teach is to have the students design some of their own word cards that might have been beneficial to add to Jason's communication book. They could also write up some of their own rules that they would like to see everyone follow that just might help make the world a better place. There are quite a few characters in this book and this would be a good book to expand character knowledge.
Other comments – This was a good, fast read and one that I will plan on incorporating into lessons in the future.
